Antique bronze occult Greek sphinx chamberstick
Invoke the sphinx as a spiritual warden to watch over you and prevent your most hideous secrets from reaching the light of day.
The sphinx of ancient Greek mythology is a guardian of terrible strength who perches up on a rock alongside the path to Thebes. The fearsome sentinel confronts passers-by with a riddle. All those who fail to guess her riddle are hurled over a cliff or mercilessly devoured---and her riddle is nigh inscrutable to the mortal mind. Sphinxes are also known as keepers of profound mystical secrets, although perhaps these too are better left to higher minds.
Although the age of the piece is uncertain, it is a finely crafted bronze antique. It's about 4" long, 4" tall, and weighs 11 1/2 ounces.
